Key Stage 4

Stone Bay School key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 the curriculum differs slightly to that followed in Key Stage 3. We continue to deliver the core subjects of English, Maths and Science and Computing as discreet subjects. It is important that for our learners Maths and Literacy lessons contain a functional skills element to them. In conjunction with the school policy Maths and Literacy will be delivered daily .

To make the curriculum as relevant as possible to the unique needs of our learners four additional subjects are studied. These modules will fulfil a role in developing our student’s life skills through linked and accredited ASDAN modules. These are designed to be flexible to the needs of the learners and choice of topics can be influenced by the interests of our students. For example the country chosen for humanities may be decided by class vote.

  • Creative Arts: Encompassing a wide, engaging curriculum that includes elements of Art, Design, Music, Media, Drama and Performing Arts. This approach allows students to explore the arts and includes many sensory activities.
  • Humanities: Focused on the culture of a variety of countries including India, Uganda and the Middle East this includes components of history, geography and RE with exposure to foreign languages where appropriate.
  • Vocational Skills: This will be based on the ASDAN transition challenge modules with elements including work experience, food technology, Design and Technology including workshop skills.
  • The Wellbeing Curriculum:  Encompasses PHSE, Sex and Relationship Education, hygiene routines, e-Safety and digital citizenship. This will feed into the ASDAN transition challenge modules. These subjects have been brought together in order to provide relevance and context to the sessions and to encourage the students to create their self-identity as a responsible and independent young person.

The curriculum is certified using the AQA Unit Award Scheme Students are expected to complete 8 Units across the key stage. Pre-Entry to Entry Level 2. All students work towards Certificates through the ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) “Transition Challenge” scheme  and help to maintain their own evidence folder for moderation. Opportunities for students to provide evidence of their progress in eight areas  and five modules are embedded within the Key Stage 4 curriculum
